The job duties of the position include: Manage and coordinate the day-to-day activities of a sow farm operation. Confer with executive management to determine production requirements, conditions of equipment and supplies, and breeding schedules. Train and supervise farm workers in proper animal care procedures, maintenance duties, and safety precautions. Assign tasks such as feeding and treatment of animals, breeding and farrowing procedures, and cleaning and maintenance of animal housing. Plan and oversee animal breeding activities. Establish output goals and monitor breeding activities, including estrus detection and artificial insemination. Monitor animal health and welfare, animal care, safety, and breeding procedures to ensure compliance with health & welfare, breeding standards, quality standards, and governmental regulations. Study growth, weight, health, genetic, and breeding records in order to determine appropriate adjustments to maximize production efficiency. Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or unusual behavior. Coordinate any medical and preventive care through contracted veterinarians as necessary. Develop and implement guidelines to ensure continued adherence to bio security requirements. Review and analyze reports and information such as production figures, farm management practices, and parent stock data. Prepare operational reports for executive management. Manage and coordinate activities dealing with containment of pig waste in lagoons, recycling of waste, elimination of harmful effluent, and irrigation of lagoons to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Work Schedule: 40 60 hours per week
Monday through Sunday (6 am 6 pm)
2 years of experience in the job offered or 2 years of experience working in a commercial animal breeding and production operation, plus knowledge of hog farming processes, animal health and safety, and environmental requirements.
Bachelors degree in agricultural sciences, agronomy, veterinary sciences, or related field of study.
